Problem: no sound, iPod does not recognize headphones. Diagnose: too much dirt. Cure: Windex. Status: Didn’t work. Second try: Manual dirt removal.

After releasing one screw inside you can remove the headphone jack without damaging any parts. It is easy then to use some small plastic to clean everything inside (I was amazed by how much dirt can fit in such a small hole). To check if the earphones work I kept the device on all the time. You can imagine my surprise when suddenly I heard the music :-)

After reassembling the device I discovered that the plug has become very touch-sensitive, after taking off the cover once again I decided to put there some paper to press it harder against the logic board. It’s not perfect, but good enough — sometimes I need to turn the plug a bit, however most of the time it works great.
