The configuration of 5.1 DVD Home Cinema System and your PS3 is just a bit more complicated than You’d expect. So far I’ve been using HDMI output to my HDTV, and from there through a mini-jack to a pair of speakers. I bought Philips HTS3531 at Allegro (polish eBay) for 300 PLN, which is around $95. Regular price is around $150. I got it because it was the cheapest 5.1 set from any known brand that was equipped with Toslink Optical-In.
